First 'Mandela Day' concert set for MSG
The festivities for the first "Mandela Day," honoring former South African President Nelson Mandela, will be fit for royalty.
Capping a week of celebration on July 18, Mandela's 91st birthday, will be a concert at Madison Square Garden featuring Queen Latifah, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the First Lady of France. Also on the bill: organizer Dave Stewart, Josh Groban, Wyclef Jean, Angelique Kidjo, Cyndi Lauper, TLC, Baaba Maal and others.
Tickets for the concert are $50-350 and go on sale at 9 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster and Live Nation.
"More than any other human being, Madiba has been the great inspiration for the life I lead and the work I do, especially in the area of HIV/AIDS," said President Bill Clinton, who will host a fundraiser as part of the festivities. "In return for everything Madiba has taught us, we each owe it to him to support his work and legacy by doing and living our own as best we can, not just on this day, but throughout our entire lives."
