I understand missing the taste of meat. So let's talk brand names. Some of my favorites of vegetarian substitutes for that meat taste - Morningstar Farms
breakfast links, Morningstar Farms variety of vegetarian burgers, Boca Burgers, Loma Linda Big Franks - they come in a can - for a wonderful hot dog that you
can grill if you want and stick on a bun, there is so much to choose from in the freezer section. Also, Loma Linda makes a product called Redi-burger that you
can crumble and put in pasta sauce and it makes simple pasta into a high protein dish. And let's not forget my favorites of Indian food, Thai food, and
Greek food for ethnic cuisine that includes a huge amount of vegetarian food. I think I just made myself hungry. Corie

Hi Vedanta. I think Loma Linda brand actually began as a company that packaged and distributed the food served at Loma Linda Hospital in Southern California,
which is a Seventh Day Adventist hospital that serves only vegetarian foods. In fact, my very first vegie burger was at the Seventh Day Adventist food booth at
the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, Massachusetts where they would cook up these enormous and delicious vegie burgers, stick them on a bun with lettuce, tomato,
and giant slabs of onion, mustard, relish, etc. and no one would believe they weren't meat. I certainly thought they must be slipping in some meat, but, of
course, they weren't. That was in the late 1970s although I think they are even older than that because I think my cousins were using the brand in the
early 1960s. Loma Linda must be one of the oldest veg. food companies, and they specialize in meat substitutes. One other food I forgot to mention is tempeh,
which is fermented soy beans pressed into a tight brick and then you slice it and saute it and can use it for sandwiches or anything else - much like tofu. I
have to be careful with it, however, because along with penicillin, I am allergic to all mold, and that includes a bit of an allergy to fermented things. So I
just have it now and then. I love it sauteed on a sandwich with cheese and mustard. Vegans can leave off the cheese or use soy cheese which is great.
One other piece of advice - bean-based foods do produce gas and are not always easy to digest especially if you have been depending on meat rather than bean, which means you may lack some of the enzymes to digest them. So go easy on them, and eat only a little for awhile before you eat very much. Your system will slowly get more used to them. And, in that case, also take Beano or some other enzyme to help you out. Beans are a bit gassy anyway so do not overeat with them - eat just enough for the protein you need and no more. In other words, if you were in a hot dog eating contest, and it was soy-based hot dogs, you would be really sorry and so would your friends and neighbors. Just a suggestion. There are many funny stories, none true, like about the vegetarians who got together for a birthday dinner one night, and, when they lit the birthday candles, the house blew up. Well, you get the idea. Corie |

Hi Vedanta. That site doesn't seem to be up, but I tried it before and it didn't have what I think you think it was, or it didn't seem like it.
Perhaps you can locate it again and put the link up again. Tempeh is generally everywhere where there is natural, organic or whole food sold, and it should be
in your whole foods market, perhaps in the freezer section. Some of it's made by White Wave, the same company that makes tofu. It is actually very mild
tasting, and it seems more substantial than tofu, richer somehow. I wish I could eat it more often than every few weeks. Glad you liked my story on gas.
Another one is when vegetarians have to get a special rider on their homeowners' insurance to cover for explosions of - er - "natural" gas. But,
of course, these are ridiculous and none are true, and most of them were made up by vegetarians as a kind of humorous lament about gas. About the vegie
recipes, people often ask me what vegetarians eat, and actually we eat a hugely creative, varied and delicious menu. OK, you mentioned the microwave and that
another issue for me. I won't say more but here is a link to read up on the topic.
http://www.health-science.com/microwave_hazards.html I decided never to have one myself. Even some of my friends have disputed with me over the dangers, but the majority of my friends don't have a microwave either, just to be on the safe side. I figured I don't really need one, so I decided not to risk it. It saves counter space anyway for chopping up those really giant veggies. Corie |

THIS is the video??? Oh my gosh, it's just great! I LOVE this. In fact, I had seen it - someone had emailed it to me, and I loved it so much I sent it to
some other people. I really think it is my favorite video of all time! I have watched it over and over. Can someone make sure Josh sees it? Pass this around.
Everyone should see it. I LOVE this big cat Christian the lion. Oh my gosh. Thanks, Vedanta.

Oh, I love that video. KITCHENCANARY posted it somewhere and I then sent it in emails to some friends. Makes me teary every time. I was telling my mother about
it and she said she saw it recently on TV! And that is an old film clip. Nice that it resurfaced. Ummmmm, so, how does the whole circle of life thing fit into
this discussion? Ya know that lion had meat on his breath.
Someone mentioned the health benefits of eating food closest to it's natural state as possible. I've heard that, also but I've also read that some veggies release more nutrients into our system if they are at least lightly steamed. Helps to start the break down of the food. As a mom I can tell you that unchewed corn comes out looking exactly the same as it went in. Yep, heard the stuff about microwaves, too. I guess I'm going to be one of those people who will end my time as a user of the world resources earlier than some due to my many bad health habits. VEDANTA SAID - "Any time I hear someone say I don't want to talk about religion or politics it really makes me cringe. What they are actually saying is that they don't want to talk about it because they feel their opinions and beliefs will be ridiculed or worse." Yes, lots of ridiculing or worse for sharing our beliefs/opinions. And often the fear of hearing other's views is based on our own insecurities of us possibly having to reconsider our own beliefs and maybe change our mind. If we do change our minds it's the same as saying we had been wrong before and our egos have a big struggle with that so we put up a wall. My son's GF is a vegetarian but I'm not sure of the reason. I know she has a lot of health issues and at one time that was the reason she gave but it might have been a smoke screen since she was still new to the family, so to speak and not sure of how'd we react. I'll have to ask her again. I do see that she doesn't seem to eat much protein of any kind but it is possible she has digestion issues with protein in any form, not just meat. As long as she never tried to pass off tofu as a meat substitute we'll be fine. ; ) God's blessings Janette |

Hi everyone! As for your talk about Veg food, Vegetarian burgers are what I always ask for breakfast. They are soooooo good.
Today, in Manhattan, there was rally against fashion designer Donna Karan because she uses fur in her products. My sister and I went and there was a lot of chanting and marching and handing out leaflets. We were told to come in pajamas or hold blankets or pillows showing that we're 'tired' of her fur. She had a fashion show and we all stood outside the building chanting and handing out things. Some of the activists held up signs and urging drivers who passed by to honk in support - and many of them did! Also a lady brought her puppy and the puppy was barking when we chanted! And the lady said her puppy doesn't usually bark a lot. So Sheina (the puppy's name) obviously knew there was something going on. As more of us Grobies merge into fighters for animal rights, I have to say - sign up for animal rights action alerts because going to a rally - any rally for that matter for humans or animals - there are simply no words to describe it. I was nearly crying because I said to myself "THIS is what life is all about. We're making history here." We also said a chant that stuck in my head. "Donna Karan, you're so tired! Using fur is uninspired!" Help some bunnies today! http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/donna_karan_fur

Ah, but who says we have free will? Who says we have a choice whether we decide to eat meat or not? Maybe you're just a vegetarian because the little
scientist controlling your brain wants you to inflict as much extremism as possible on to unsuspecting meat eaters. And maybe we meat eaters just eat meat
because our little scientists want to make your's MAD. There's no right or wrong because no one can prove free will exists.
The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.

Also I'm vegetarian because I don't want hungry children in Africa to be starving anymore. Does that answer your question? My "little scientist" is not trying to make you look like a loser, she's trying to inform you on what exactly you're eating and how it's affecting you, people living in poverty and the environment. There really shouldn't be much of a choice in this matter because it's the same case where a robber is pointing a gun at a victim - to shoot or not to shoot. There shouldn't be a choice in that. Choose life. Don't kill. I have a question. What's your opinion on Grobanites For Charity? Those "little scientists" who stand up against poverty are trying to " inflict" inspiration and awareness to "unsuspecting" people who don't know about poverty.

Speaking of veggie burgers- omg they are really SOOOO good. I used to just grind or chop any kind of vegetable I could find (literally, any veggie) and add
some eggs, a little cheese, spices, and then roll into breadcrumbs and fry. *salivating* Whoah they were SO good.
I have had quorn and tofu before, quorn is better, tofu has no taste whatsoever... don't like it, sorry... I believe if I HAD to give up meat, I could. I would probably survive on vegetables. I just need the decision. Maybe one day. Hey Laura, I found your argument very grown-uppish, my sincere congratulations, girl, you are so damn wise.

What does being a vegetarian have to do with kids in Africa? Don't you care about the kids in America who go hungry every night? You don't eat meat
because "it's bad for you" so that makes more for the less fortunate children of third world countries? What is your point? You just think you
choose to be a vegetarian, you'll never know whether it's really you or an outside cause pushing you towards that. Therefore, THERE IS NO RIGHT OR
WRONG.
Seriously though, why does no one care about THE KIDS IN AMERICA WHO DON'T HAVE FOOD. Let us take care of our own before we take care of others. The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.
