Josh Groban Like Andrea Bocelli, the American Josh Groban balances between pop and light classical music. He got his major break in The Television series Ally McBeal with a few songs that you can find on this great debut album. and the other one: Josh Groban He is 20 years old and already assigned to the # 1 singing phenomenon of the year. It is not a disadvantage that David Foster himself discovered him, or that he gets help by The Corrs, Charlotte Church and Lily Haydn on this debut album. Groban has also acted in two of this year's episodes of Ally McBeal, something that has given fantastic response in the US. To simplify a bit, Josh Groban is Andrea Bocelli, with really great looks and a trained voice! Posts: 1687 (12/06/02 06:25:26) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	an editorial review of the DVD: Amazon.com Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I.. The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Besides their usual outrage at the actors continual shaft by the neglectful PTB, they marveled at his multi-dimensional abilities, more surprising by each reveal. Journalist, athlete, comedian, actor, and now, singer? Pshaw!, North reacted, humbly, although his parents can both hit the right notes. Hes nothing like a TV fave, classically trained Josh Groban (Ally McBeal). Thats a singer. You think, Hey maybe I could be a singer, and then you listen to his music and [the thought] quickly fades. The Reprise artist made television appearances last week on "Live With Regis and Kelly" and "Access Hollywood" to promote the album, which also helped fuel a 41% sales jump for his self-titled debut, causing a 27-12 increase on the chart. The latter album has sold close to 2 million units this year. Rolling Stone: Shania Whips Mariah The rest of the chart show evidence of the winter lull beginning to set in. Only eight albums in the Top Fifty and fourteen in the Top 100 enjoyed a sales increase from the previous week. And all the way down at Number Thirty-five, Josh Groban's In Concert was the week's second-highest debut with sales of 59,000, followed by the Eminem-less sequel to the 8 Mile soundtrack, which seemed to set off B.S. detectors among listeners. The compilation settled in at Number 152 with sales of 12,000. And don't expect a lot of movement in the coming weeks. Some of the hits with legs -- Avril Lavigne's Let Go (Number Six with sales of 175,000), Groban's self-titled debut (Number Twelve, 130,000), The Eminem Show (Number Fifteen, 109,000), Norah Jones' Come Away With Me (Number Seventeen, 100,000) -- will continue to walk back towards the Top Ten, as some of the strong-yet-forgettable debuts start to make their hasty exits. MTV: Mariah Can't Top Shania On Billboard Albums Chart Also poised to be popular under wrapping paper, perhaps because of so many "best of 2002" accolades, are albums by classical crooner Josh Groban and jazzy songstress Norah Jones. Groban's eponymous debut saw a weekly sales increase of nearly 40,000 copies and moves from #27 to #12; Jones' Come Away With Me added only 5,000 more copies, but that was enough to push it from #26 to #17. Groban also surfaces at #35 with his new In Concert LP. E! Online: Carey Comeback Charms Charts For the most part, the music biz's retail rush has cooled its engines. In the previous three weeks, 36 new albums made Top 50 debuts; Charmbracelet was only one of two Top 50 bows on this week's charts. The other belonged to Josh Groban, whose In Concert sold 59,000 copies to open at number 35 bow. The young actor-singer's self-titled debut is still faring well, holding down the number 12 spot and selling 130,000 copies more than a year after its initial release. Rounding out the Top Five were a pair of albums by the 11th edition of the ever-popular Now series (UTV) and Shady/Interscope/UMG Strxs soundtrack to the Eminem-starring 8 Mile. Coming in at #6 was Arista wunderkind Avril Lavigne, who, like "fellow" newcomer Norah Jones Blue Note bow (#17 this week on a 7% sales increase) and the Energizer Bunny, keeps on going, and going and going. Behind Avril were Jennifer Lopez (Epic) (#7) with her second week on the chart, the posthumously percolating 2Pac (Amaru/Tha Row/Interscope) ( #8 ), Dixie Chicks (Open Wide/Columbia/CRG) (#9), and TV-propelled "popera" singer Josh Groban (143/Reprise) (#10), vaulting 19 spots on a 37% sales jump. Only Arista Nashville country star Alan Jacksons Christmas album (47-31), with a 44% increase, had a larger boost. I viewed the tape the next day and was completely blown over by this wonderfully talented man! The performance was terrific. I'm also impressed that a young talent can sell over two million recordings without having to bump, grind, get lewd or crude in front of an audience. The Tuscan tenor's success has sired a new musical genre and a host of fresh faces. Known as pop tenors, PBS tenors or Baby Bocellis, these young talents include Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban and Russell Watson, each with a distinct personality, but key Bocellian elements in common: a cosmopolitan, semioperatic repertoire and a kinder, gentler sex appeal. And this is their season. Recording companies have bet their promotional budgets on these talents during the Christmas shopping period; the singers' TV specials on PBS are the linchpins of holiday membership drives. Great hopes ride on them at a time when sales projections yield anxiety elsewhere in the industry. Groban's breakthrough was 18 months ago in an "Ally McBeal" episode in which he played a teen who astonishes his prom with his angelic singing voice. He's now 21. The 35-year-old Watson's working-class Manchester, England, background and the smoky men's clubs in which he sang were hardly the places to learn Puccini's "Nessun dorma." Yet he did. (He also can be heard weekly, singing the theme to UPN's "Enterprise.") Frangoulis, estimated to be in his early 30s, is the most experienced performer of the group, having done time in the casts of "Les Miz" and "Phantom of the Opera." Baby B. fans seem to come from everywhere, but no place in particular, which makes selling these singers so hit-and-miss that marketers crave a silver bullet something that will find its target wherever it is. The best example is Groban's "McBeal" appearance. Some have called that a "silver freight train," since these artists don't get the radio airplay or show up on MTV, a Sony exec points out. "PBS is one of the few outlets left." The nightmare scenario is a depleted promotional budget and a talent that flashes in the pan. And that's where these singers become truly unpredictable, because in this new genre, longevity is reached via different rules. There's no indication that Groban has peaked. Barbra Streisand's much-ballyhooed mystery collaborator on her new "Duets" album turned out to be ... Groban.

Last year three fresh artists stormed those ranks, while four made the grade in 2000 (though none of those made the top 10). Of the baby acts to break, Jones isn't the only old-style crooner. Groban took the No. 17 slot with his self-titled CD, which features a mix of show tunes, light opera and schmaltz. That such a singer, along with a hard rapper like Eminem and a roots-oriented project like ``O Brother,'' can all appear on the same list points to the lack of cohesion in popular sales. Fans increasingly are buying within genres, with fewer albums creating a broad consensus. The newest niche is for neo-cabaret singers like Jones and Groban. Even though they're both young artists, they appeal to older fans. As Mayfield explains, ``One of this year's most positive themes was proof that it pays to skew old. When JOSH GROBAN, 21, released his self-titled album last November, its unconventional style baffled radio stations. That's because Groban wraps his baritone around a hybrid of opera and pop, sings in English, Spanish and Italian and, when he performs, is not afraid to look and act like Michael Bolton.
